There is a royal appointment whose entire job is walking people across this bay. It is 478 years old, and people still book months ahead.

That is the sort of place this is, and nobody covers it as one. Both shores, one email, every Thursday.

This week's sponsor: Rebecca Haddow, Mobile Hairstylist.

Twenty years of salon experience, now coming to your front door. Rebecca has gone mobile across the area, offering cuts and restyles, colouring, extensions, perms and blow-dry’s, all in the comfort of your own home. Friendly, professional, and tailored to you.

One Day Left, Four Miles Over The County Line

Westmorland County Show is at Lane Farm, Crooklands, near Milnthorpe, and today is the second and last day of it. Gates opened at 8am, it runs to 6pm, and parking is free.

Cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. Food halls, trade stands, the whole apparatus of a proper county show, on a permanent showground the society has held for generations. More than 30,000 people come through it, which makes it one of the largest shows in the country.

Open Days Galore!

Heritage Open Days runs 11th to 20th September and this year's theme is Everyday Histories, so shopkeepers and mill workers rather than lords. Lancaster Castle, the Judges' Lodgings, The Storey, Lancaster Priory, Morecambe Heritage Centre and Morecambe Winter Gardens are all in. Free, donations welcome, and a handful of the tours want booking ahead.

Go and See Eric While You Still Can

Follow The Sunshine closes on Saturday 19th. Photos, postcards, letters, scripts, in his centenary year. It opens Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only, so the nine days left are really five, and one of them is today.

This exhibition is supported by Morecambe Town Council.

A Bit of Bang For You

Bay Drumfest lands on Saturday 26th, free. The Drum Trail leaves the Stone Jetty at 1pm, there is an open workshop with the Baybeat Street Band at the Kings Arms at 3pm, and the Grand Sunset Parade goes from the RNLI station at 6.50pm. Batala Lancaster, Baybeat, Banda na Rua, SambAfriq and the Milnthorpe Steel Band, plus stilt walkers. Samba Espirito organised it for their tenth birthday. A Cumbrian band on a Lancashire prom, which is rather the point of all this.

There is a Royal Warrant On a Shrimp Firm in Flookburgh

James Baxter & Son have been potting Morecambe Bay shrimps since 1880, out of a family that has been in this bay since the 1600s. Seven generations, one secret recipe, and by their own account the process has never changed. The Queen Mother gave them a Royal Warrant in the sixties, Queen Elizabeth renewed it in the seventies, and King Charles and Queen Camilla granted it fresh in December 2024. You can order online or ring them on 01524 410910, Monday to Friday, nine till three.
