Good morning. The clocks went back last weekend, so it’s dark by five. That’s grim for the drive home and very good news for Light Up Lancaster, which switches on tonight.
IN TODAY'S SCOOP
Here’s your week around the bay.

Near Kippford, south-west Scotland. A woodland escape around two hours’ drive from Morecambe Bay.

Look out for red squirrels over your morning coffee, then follow woodland trails from the doorstep or spend the afternoon exploring the Solway coast. Back at Treetops, gather for dinner in the Nordic BBQ cabin, curl up beside the log burner or slip into the hot tub under the stars.
Treetops Log Cabin was chosen by travel experts at holidaycottages.co.uk as one of the top three countryside escapes in the UK, and the second best lodge break in the UK.
The 2027 calendar is now open. Book direct for the best prices and Treetops will have a luxury welcome hamper waiting for you.

Find some peace on the deck, with views over the trees.
LIGHT UP LANCASTER STARTS TONIGHT

From 5pm tonight until 10, and again on Friday and Saturday, Lancaster's streets, squares and old buildings are lit up with light art. This year's theme is No Boundaries. It is all free, it works for children, and there is a map on the festival's site so you can plan a loop rather than wander and hope.
Kanteena on Brewery Lane is adding free family DJ sets and a laser show on Friday and Saturday as part of it.
Across the bay, Holker's Winter Market opens tomorrow and runs to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm, with craft stalls, gifts and street food in the grounds. It is the one that starts Christmas round here, and a few things are worth knowing before you set off:
Tickets are bought online for the day you want. Under-12s go free but still need booking with your adult tickets.
Dogs on leads are welcome in the market and the gardens.
Parking is on uneven ground five to ten minutes' walk away, and Holker warns the lanes get busy, so go early.
RHS and Historic Houses cards do not count for this one.

Around the Bay
A forgotten Lancaster inventor

Karel Klíč was a Bohemian-born artist and inventor who lived and worked in Lancaster in the 1890s, and hardly anyone here has heard of him. The Storey is putting that right with a free exhibition, The Copy That: Karel Klíč, Art For All, from Saturday 14th to Wednesday 25th November, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
Free, indoors and on for twelve days. (worth remembering for a wet afternoon.)

Twenty years of salon experience, now coming to your front door. Rebecca has gone mobile across the area, offering cuts and restyles, colouring, extensions, perms and blow-dry's, all in the comfort of your own home.
Friendly, professional, and tailored to you.

ONE GOOD THING

Since 2020, Morecambe Bay Wills & Estates has handed 5% of every will and power of attorney bill to good causes, which now adds up to more than £59,000. This year's community fund is £15,000, twice last year's. Last year thirty groups got £250 each, from the Four Seasons Allotments Association to Age UK South Cumbria and St John's Hospice. This year the grants are £250 or £500, depending on the size of the project.
Here is the useful bit. It covers North Lancashire and South Cumbria alike, nominations are open all year, and anyone can nominate a group, not only the people who run it. All a group needs is a bank account in its own name. The next grants go out in January.
So if you know a village hall, a junior football team, a choir or a lunch club that could use £500, ten minutes tonight might get it for them.
