A Busy Weekend in Morecambe
The poetry festival is five years old and runs Friday to Sunday, from 7pm each night, across the Winter Gardens and the Kings Arms. John Cooper Clarke, Patience Agbabi, Henry Normal, Brian Bilston, Kate Fox and Attila the Stockbroker are among the names.
A weekend pass gets you into every show at both venues.
The Winter Gardens opened in 1897 and is Grade II* listed. Restoration is still going on upstairs, so the shows use the ground floor and stalls for now.

Bats in the Attic fills the Alhambra on Friday and Saturday. Twelve gothic rock bands, from Norway, Germany, Italy, Mexico and the US as well as England, for the festival's fifth birthday. Doors are 4.30pm on Friday and 1.30pm on Saturday. A weekend ticket is £70.
Gospel Bayfest is at The Platform, for its ninth year. Concerts are at 7pm on Friday, then 2pm and 7pm on Saturday. The Saturday morning praise and testimony session and the Sunday service, both at 10.30am, are free.
The BID Community Market takes over Market Street, Euston Road and New Town Square on Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with traders from both counties. Free to wander. After this one there is no market until the Christmas one on 19th December.
And on Sunday night, Ríoghnach Connolly and Honeyfeet play More Music on Devonshire Road. Jazz, brass, funk and folk, fronted by a former BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year.
Around the Bay
Ulverston lights up on Saturday
Ulverston Lantern Festival is on Saturday night. Four processions set off from different points around the town from 7pm and meet in County Square, outside the Coro, at about 8pm.
Fireworks follow at Ford Park at about 9pm. It is free to watch. The town centre is closed to traffic from 7pm to 10pm, and cars in the town car parks cannot leave until the streets reopen, so park with that in mind.
Lancaster Music Festival is back next month
After a year off, Lancaster Music Festival returns from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th October. More than 300 acts play across 50 venues, from the castle to cafés, squares and around 30 pubs and bars. Nearly all of it is free.
Organisers expect about 50,000 people, and there are family activities and workshops alongside the music. Worth putting in the diary now.
Allow extra time on the M6 north of Carnforth
National Highways is fitting a new central reservation barrier between junctions 35 and 36. Until 11th December one lane is shut in each direction and there is a 40mph limit.
The southbound carriageway between the two junctions is closed completely from 8pm to 6am each night up to Saturday, and tonight the northbound exit slip at junction 36 is shut over the same hours. Overnight northbound lane closures carry on until 2nd October.
Holker is having a venison week
From Wednesday 7th to Sunday 11th October, Holker puts its own wild venison front and centre. There are free tastings and cookery demonstrations in the courtyard, venison on the Courtyard Café menu, and a presentation on how the estate looks after its deer and woodland.
The fallow deer herd has been on the estate for more than 400 years. Ticketed extras include a deer park safari with the estate's forestry and deer manager and a venison supper on Thursday 8th, but prices and times are not out yet.

ONE GOOD THING
The tractors were out in Furness again.
The Furness and District Tractor Run set off from Ulverston Auction Mart on Sunday 6th September, went through Barrow and finished at The Commercial in Kirkby-in-Furness, with people out along the roads to wave it through. It has raised more than £94,000 for St Mary's Hospice since it began in 2019, and this year's money is still coming in.
They are hoping this year takes it past £100,000.
