HALLOWEEN & FIREWORKS ARE HERE!

The weekend's storms have blown through. Sunderland Point and a few low roads round the bay were under flood warnings and alerts at the start of the week, so give the Environment Agency flood page a quick look before you drive the shore roads.
Holker has its Halloween days on Friday and Saturday, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Children get pumpkin carving, a ghostly trail, monster crafts and face painting in the gardens. A child ticket is £12 when you buy it with an adult gardens ticket, and the activities are paid for on the day.
Storyteller Taffy Thomas is in the Library at 11am and 2pm, for about an hour each time. Those sessions are £5 a person, adults included, and Holker recommends booking ahead. Halloween at Holker
On Saturday evening, Lancaster's Espirito of the Dead Halloween parade is on Penny Street from 6pm.
Sunday is the turn. The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway runs its last steam train of 2026, and that evening Morecambe Promenade has its fireworks: gates at 5pm, a children's display around 6.30pm and the main one around 8.30pm, free, with a fun fair and food stalls. Heysham Village does the same on Monday.
And on Bonfire Night itself, Longlands Inn at Tewitfield has Barry's Firework Bonanza from 7pm. In their own words: "knowing Barry, there'll probably be a bit of showing off."

Morecambe has a comedy festival next month

Steve Royle headlines the opening night at the Winter Gardens
The Morecambe Comedy Festival runs from Saturday 21st to Saturday 28th November, in the year of Eric Morecambe's centenary. Steve Royle headlines the opening night at the Winter Gardens at 8pm, with Brennan Reece and Daliso Chaponda, and there are free caricature workshops there the same afternoon at 2pm and 3.30pm.
Through the week there are three nights at the West End Playhouse, Just The Tonic at The Platform and a Best of Morecambe showcase at the Town Hall. It closes on the 28th with Ed Bye and Paul Jackson in conversation at the Winter Gardens.
A new exhibition at the Maritime Museum

The exhibition opened early at Lancaster Maritime Museum, it was scheduled to open on 31st October
A Formidable Force opened at Lancaster Maritime Museum on the 17th October and runs until the 14th February, so it covers every wet weekend between now and spring.
Up the road, the City Museum's Hidden Hoards and Fascinating Finds closes on Sunday, and its next exhibition, Through the Lens, opens on the 21st of November.

Sandylands Primary School Staff in 1911

Sandylands Primary School Staff 2026
Sandylands Primary in Morecambe is 125 years old this month, and it is asking for help filling in its history.
The school opened in 1901 on a temporary site on Sefton Road, with just over 100 children, and moved to Hampton Road in 1904. It has over 400 pupils today. Head Penny Lupton, whose mother taught there, is building a family tree of the school and wants names, photos, old exercise books and memories from anyone who went. Racing motorcyclist John McGuinness is one former pupil already found.
Year six teacher Angela Cokell was a pupil there too, so the children have started by interviewing her!
Call 01524 410286 or email [email protected] if you think you may be able to help.
