OUR EVENTS CALENDAR, AND HALF TERM
Everything further down this email is one week of the bay, picked by us. Which limits the newsletters potential, and it has been bothering us for a while. So we built a calendar!
Here it is —> calendar.thebayscoop.co.uk. You can filter it by ‘Family’, ‘Free events’, ‘Dogs welcome’, ‘Live music’ or ‘Book ahead’, or by theme for Halloween and Christmas. You can set it to your own town and a radius of miles. There is a list view, a grid of pictures and a map with a pin on every venue. And you can save the ones you fancy too. You can even request an event be added.

Which makes this a good week to hand it over, because half term starts on Monday.
Lancaster spends the week giving things away. Explore Week runs all five days at The Storey which is free: hands-on workshops about light, art and science, put together with Lancaster University's engagement team, and the warm-up for Light Up Lancaster on the 5th to 7th of November.
For a single day out, Tuesday is the clearest: Rapunzel at The Dukes at 11am and 1pm, fifty minutes, ages three and up, £14 for adults and £10 for under 16s, and the 11am show is down to its last few.

Rapunzel | The Dukes, Lancaster. Tuesday, 11am and 1pm
The Cumbrian shore spends the same week shutting up. The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway runs its last steam train of the year on Sunday the 1st of November. Lakeland Motor Museum's prices hold until the same day, at £13.25 for adults and £36 for a family.
Hidden Hoards and Fascinating Finds closes at Lancaster City Museum on the 1st. And Holker has its Halloween days on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st, 10.30am to 4pm, with Taffy Thomas storytelling, pumpkin carving and a trail through the gardens.
Around the Bay

Two big comedy nights
Daniel Kitson brings Thrum to The Dukes on Thursday at 7.30pm. Kitson does not tour widely, does not advertise much, and tends to fill small theatres by word of mouth, so this is the sort of date that goes before most people hear about it.
On Saturday, Jon Richardson is at the Grand at 8pm, doors 7.15pm, with The Teenage Diaries of a Stand-Up Comedian. He grew up in Lancaster, and his local dates have a history of selling out quickly.

Cartmel has put out next year's race dates
Cartmel Racecourse finished its 2026 season on the August bank holiday, and the 2027 fixtures are now published. Nine days in all: the 29th and 31st of May, the 2nd of June, the 25th and 27th of June, the 17th and 19th of July, then Cartmel Cup Day on the 28th of August and the season finale on the 30th.
Race times come later. We mention it in October because Cartmel is a village of about 1,500 people that takes several thousand racegoers in a day, and the cottages go early.
The same village is a Village du Tour for the 2027 Tour de France stages in Cumbria, so next summer is busy there twice over.

An hour of history for £5
On Friday at noon, Judges Lodgings in Lancaster hosts a Black History Month lecture on the Lune Valley and the West Indies, and how sugar, cotton and the slavery economy reached this valley.
It runs for an hour and costs £5, and that £5 includes refreshments and entry to the museum, which is a Georgian town house full of Gillow furniture with a childhood museum upstairs.
Judges Lodgings runs these roughly monthly on a Friday lunchtime, and they are the cheapest hour of history either shore sells.

The clocks go back on Sunday
British Summer Time ends at 2am on Sunday 25th, and you get an extra hour in bed.
Where did this year go!? … Summer was like 5 minutes ago.
One upside arrives a week later. By the time the Morecambe Promenade fireworks open their gates at 5pm on Sunday 1st, it will be properly dark. Heysham Village does the same on the Monday. Both free, children's display around 6.30pm and the main one around 8.30pm.

ONE GOOD THING

The Grange-over-Sands Lecture Society held its first meeting in Victoria Hall on the 6th of January 1908. Apart from a few years in the 1920s, it has met in the same room ever since.
It still meets fortnightly on a Tuesday at 7.15pm prompt, and the current programme runs through to the middle of March. Next Tuesday Peter Jones talks about restoring the nature of a mountain, up at Skiddaw Forest. Norman Harris crosses the United States by Harley-Davidson on the 10th of November, and Jenny Fenwick talks about a Mary Quant dress on the 24th.
A hundred and eighteen years of Tuesday evenings is the sort of thing that only keeps going because people keep turning up.
