Drums on the prom this Saturday
Bay Drumfest is Samba Espirito's own festival, put on for their tenth birthday with a £1,000 grant from Morecambe Town Council. It is free and runs from 1pm into the evening.
Eleven bands play a drum trail at spots along the promenade through the afternoon, starting outside the Stone Jetty Cafe. Alongside Samba Espirito there are Baybeat Street Band, Batala Lancaster, Boom Dang, Bjamba, Batida Rio, Valley Beats, Jubacana, Sambafriq, Banda Na Rua and Milnthorpe Steel Band. Samba and Afro-Brazilian drumming mostly, with the steel band as the odd one out. Northern Heights Stilt Walkers, The Performance School, Turning Point, Morecambe Bay Academy dancers and The Dance Hub perform too.
Baybeat Street Band is running a workshop for anyone who wants a go.
At 6.45pm the bands and dancers parade from the RNLI station back along the prom to Harry's Bar. That is the part to be there for.
Alongside the town council, the festival is backed by Morecambe BID, Lingwood Security Management, The King's Arms, The Midland Hotel, and 3R Foundation and Charity Shop.

Staying out after the parade? Guns 2 Roses play The Platform the same night, on a date moved from last October, and original tickets are still valid. Around the Bay
The mayor's race night, next Friday
Councillor Colin Hartley, the Mayor of Lancaster, is hosting a charity race night at Morecambe Town Hall on Friday 2 October. Doors open at 6.30pm and racing runs from 7pm to 11pm. Entry is £5.
The money goes to Morecambe Bay Foodbank and Citizens Advice North Lancashire, which between them support more than 15,000 people a year across the district.
The Misanthrope
The National Theatre's broadcast of The Misanthrope is showing at The Dukes in Lancaster and at Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands in the same week.
The Dukes has it at 5pm on Friday and 2pm on Sunday. Victoria Hall has it at 7pm on Saturday. It is rated 15. Neither venue publishes a price, so ring or book online. Pick whichever shore you are on.
Fewer morning trains at Haverthwaite from next week
From Saturday 3 October until the season ends on 1 November, the 09:50 and 10:20 trains on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway do not run.
The timetable is published as an image, so check it on the day or ring 015395 31594 before driving over for a morning train.
Leighton Hall after the season
Leighton Hall's main season ends next week. Its events diary says Monday 28th and its opening times page says Wednesday 30th, so ring 01524 734474 before going.
After that the house keeps a few ticketed autumn days.
Tennants are holding a free valuations day on Thursday 1 October, 11am to 3pm. Elle Morse runs an autumn painting day on Saturday 10 October, 10am to 3pm, for £60 including materials. Apple Day is on Sunday 18 October, 10am to 3pm, with early bird tickets at £1 for under fives, £3.50 for ages 5 to 11 and £6.50 for everyone older.

Holgates started with a lease on one field at Silverdale.
Billy and Miriam Holgate leased Middlebarrow Plain in 1956 and bought the lease outright in 1967. It is ten parks now, across both counties, with over 200 staff, and James and Thomas Holgate are the fourth generation in it. The firm is seventy this year.
