APPLE DAY AT LEIGHTON HALL ON SUNDAY

Leighton Hall, just outside Carnforth, has been the home of the Gillow family, the Lancaster furniture makers, since Richard Gillow bought it in 1822. Its walled kitchen garden still holds part of the original orchard, and the estate has been planting traditional Lancashire apple trees in among the old ones.

On Sunday the orchard gets its day. Apple Day runs from 10am to 3pm, with apple picking, tasting and pressing, a makers market, and cider, juices, bakes and preserves to buy. There are have-a-go sessions in basket weaving, beekeeping and campfire cooking, costumed Victorian guides, and demonstrators including the Bee Club, the RSPB and Harrison Ward, the Fell Foodie.

Apple Day runs from 10am to 3pm

New this year is a smoothie bike: you pedal, and it turns windfall apples into a smoothie. There is also a new walking tour and talk. The tearoom, gardens, play areas, maze and woodland walk are all open.

One thing to know before you set off: the house stays shut. It is an outdoor event, and Leighton Hall says it cannot open the house on Apple Day. It goes ahead rain or shine, and dogs are welcome on short leads, with some areas restricted.

Early bird tickets are £1 for under fives, £3.50 for 5 to 11s and £6.50 for everyone older, and you can also buy on the day. It is about ten minutes from junction 35 of the M6, at LA5 9ST.

Litfest gala poetry reading

Litfest's Autumn Weekend

Lancaster's literature festival holds its Autumn Weekend from Friday to Sunday, at venues across the city including The Storey, Atkinsons Upper Hall, Lancaster University and The Gregson.

It opens on Friday at 7pm in The Storey's auditorium, with a gala reading hosted by the Blackpool poet Nathan Parker. Fifteen poets read work on the theme of Wonder, chosen from this year's National Poetry Day submissions. Tickets are £6, or £3 for children, for ages 12 and over.

Across the weekend, the poets Kim Moore and Eoghan Walls read from new collections, and children's author Katherine Woodfine retells Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone. All tickets are through The Dukes box office on 01524 598500.

Steam train approaching Newby Bridge

A fortnight of steam left at Haverthwaite

The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway ends its season on Sunday 1 November. Until then, trains run every day.

Steam engines pull 1950s carriages through the Leven Valley from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, at the southern end of Windermere, where you can connect with Windermere Lake Cruises. Dogs ride free.🐶

Haverthwaite station has a tearoom in the old waiting room, open 9am to 4.30pm with last food orders at 3pm, plus an engine shed, a woodland playground and a walk. Ring 015395 31594 for train times.

Historical Women of Lancaster story tour

Lancaster on foot, with a guide

Lancaster City Museums run guided story tours of the city centre, and two fall this week. Each takes about an hour and a half and costs £10. They are aimed at adults and suitable from age 12, and dogs on leads are welcome.

On Saturday at 11am, Eleanor Levin's Historical Women of Lancaster 2 sets off from the City Museum. It follows women's words and writing, from a nurse sending postcards home from First World War France to a loom-breaking Luddite and an anti-slavery campaigner.

On Tuesday at 11am, Naomi Parsons leads Getting Your Head Down, around the sites of the city's notorious lodging houses. It starts on Henry Street, outside the German Doner Kebab. Book ahead online or at the City Museum.
